I first discovered writing and the power of words when I took a creative writing class in college. This experience led me to the college newspaper, where I wrote a weekly column, contributed fully-reported stories, and served as photography editor for two years and editor my senior year.
A Foundation in Journalism
After college graduation, I moved across the state and worked as the editor of a small town newspaper in western South Dakota. At age 23, I became a news staff of one and had complete responsibility for producing the weekly publication. I covered city council and school board meetings; wrote editorials, news stories, and headlines; produced photos (the old fashioned way, in the darkroom); and pasted up every page of the newspaper myself. Meeting the challenge, I put out a quality newspaper and won numerous state press association awards for my articles, photography, and design work.
Legal Writing Becomes a Focus
Always interested in law, I considered law school but instead earned a paralegal degree in 2003 and became a certified paralegal in 2006. A skilled legal researcher and writer, I think of legal research and writing as a “treasure hunt,” and never give up looking for that perfect piece of legal precedent that will bolster a case or support a legal conclusion – it never gets old. I have also served on several jury trials, one as the foreman, and the experiences gave me a real world understanding of the law.
Paralegal Turned Legal Copywriter
I’m the right copywriter for you because I speak legal, not legalese. In my 11 years as a paralegal, I’ve worked in many areas of law, including personal injury, workers’ compensation, medical malpractice, intellectual property, corporate law, state government, and civil and criminal litigation.
Technology is the backbone of a successful law practice, and I understand how to use it to manage cases, exchange discovery, and prepare and present cases at trial, because I’ve done it for sole practitioners, medium and large-sized law firms, government agencies, and global corporations.
I also understand your clients and what they are looking for when they scan your website, blog, and marketing materials. My direct, concise, and easy-to-understand writing style will convince them that your firm is the one who can best represent them or your company can help them solve their legal technology concerns.
I live in Rapid City, South Dakota, near the beautiful Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. I enjoy reading, hiking, spoiling my grandson, and spending time with my three dogs and two cats – all former rescue pets and current divas.
